DETAILS FOR ENTRY TO

ST. IVES HARBOUR RAFT RACE 2009

Friday 7th August at 7.00pm

The RULES are simple, as are the aims of the race.  It is an opportunity to let down our hair and all join in a bit of fun.  We hope everyone has a really great evening.

The most important requests we have are:

  1. Please DO NOT BRING EGGS to use as missiles as they can really hurt when thrown.  However, you can use flour bombs instead!
  2. IT IS A CONDITION OF YOUR ENTRY THAT YOU REMOVE YOUR RAFT FROM THE VICINITY OF THE HARBOUR AFTER THE RACE.

Rafts are launched from the old slipway (by the Sloop Inn).  They line up just off the slipway, paddle to the lifeboat slipway, pickup their mermaid who must be waiting there (no mermaids to jump in and swim to you please), you then all paddle to the steps at the end of Smeaton’s Pier, the mermaid runs up the steps and collects a token from the Marshal there, everyone then paddles back to the start and runs to the control point where to token is presented by the mermaid to the race organiser.

IT IS HOPED THAT THIS ROUTE WILL MAKE THE RACE INTERESTING AND CHALLENGING.  WAIT FOR THE STARTER TO SOUND THE START HORN AND DROP THE LARGE START FLAG BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO RACE.  RAFTS WHO START AHEAD OF HORN AND FLAG WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

Any competitors who are under the age of 16 on the day of the race are required to wear a life jacket and please declare this on your entry form.  All competitors must be able to swim and compete entirely at their own risk.

Entry into the race costs £20.00 per raft.  This is used to pay for prizes and ccsts of running the race.  Any profit will be put into the general funds of the St. Ives Pilot Gig Club.  The entry fee is payable at the control point before the start of the race and all members of crews must register before the race with the race marshal at the control point next to the Rose Lodge.

This year, we have decided that rafts using a manufactured hull will be treated as professional entries and will be judged as such.  They are welcome to join in and race but will not be allowed a place as a fun entry.

The first raft and the winners of the fancy dress will receive a certificate.

Before you race please complete an entry form, available from Slipways Restaurant, Fish Street or download one from our website www.stivespilotgigclub.co.uk

To help us to anticipate the number of rafts could you please find a minute to text 07751 135 552 or 07870 511 703 that you are entering, preferably a few days before the race.

Thanks, Gerri Pardoe, Race Organiser
