2008 New Plastic Gig

Most seaside towns in Cornwall have at least one Pilot Gig.  Here in St. Ives we have two gigs 'Porthminster' and 'Defiance'. Our club was formed in 1990 by a group of local people keen to join in the revival of a very Cornish tradition.  For nearly two years they worked to raise the money to buy Porthminster.  In the meantime, with just a set of paddles and no boat, they travelled to events borrowing boats to race in. The gig club at Mounts Bay were very helpful and would allow our club to train in their boat too.

We have come a long way from those first days thanks to the single minded dedication of our club members.  While most clubs have been fortunate to receive grants to buy new gigs we have not been so lucky and have had to raise the cash for both boats ourselves, and we are rather proud of ourselves for doing it.

We bought our second gig 'Defiance' in 1997, she is a lighter boat than 'Porthminster' and is the one we take almost every weekend to race somewhere in Cornwall.

We love to row and love the excitement of racing, six rowers and their cox, in a wonderful traditional Cornish craft. Unless you've tried it, you can't understand the thrill it can give you. Why not join us and give it a try?

We also have a new plastic training boat that we have named Porthmeor that we took possession of February 2008.

This is a photo taken on the Scillies of our two gigs Porthminster and Defiance.
